Yamaoka Kagenao (山岡景猶)

Kagenao YAMAOKA was a busho (Japanese military commander) in the Sengoku period. Kagetaka YAMAOKA was his younger brother.

He was born as the third son of Kageyuki YAMAOKA. He served the Rokkaku clan and Yoshiteru OSHIKAGA, but when Nobunaga ODA entered Kyoto and extended his influence, he served Mitsuhide AKECHI, the vassal of Nobunaga.

He was given 2,500 koku (approximately 450,000 liter of crop yield) in Omi Province in 1570. During the fire attack against Mt. Hiei in 1571, Nobunaga used Kagenao's mansion on the ground of Mii-dera temple as his headquarters.

When Yoshiaki ASHIKAGA took up arms against Nobunaga in July 1573, Kagenao rejected Yoshiaki's invitation to join his army, and at the Battle of Makishima-jo Castle, he successfully helped Nobunaga. When Hideyoshi HASHIBA gained his influence after Nobunaga died in the Honno-ji Incident in June 1582, Kagenao supported Katsuie SHIBATA together with his older brother. Because of that, he and his brother were punished by dismissal and deprivation of their positions, privileges and properties after the Battle of Shizugatake. He later served Kiyomasa KATO and had military exploits by suppressing the Amakusa Uprising occurred when Kiyomasa entered Higo Province in 1588.

After the death of Hideyoshi, he approached Ieyasu TOKUGAWA, and served Hideyasu YUKI, the second son of Ieyasu. He died in 1599.
